Anthropic Investors See Billions in Gains Before Public Debut
Early and late-stage backers of the AI firm are holding stakes worth billions at the current private valuation, ahead of a potential $2 trillion IPO this year.

For the investors who put capital into Anthropic during its earlier years, the financial rewards are already substantial, even before the company touches the public stock market. While the artificial intelligence lab is expected to list its shares this year at a valuation that could reach $2 trillion, the current private market price of $965 billion has already transformed their holdings into multi-billion-dollar assets. This windfall is not limited to the earliest believers; later-stage investors who entered the picture when the company was already a giant are also seeing their positions swell significantly.
Eric Schmidt, the former chief executive of Google, represents one of the most prominent early examples of this wealth creation. According to PitchBook data, Schmidt participated in the company’s Series A round in 2021, a time when Anthropic was valued at just $461 million. That initial bet has since matured into a stake worth nearly $10 billion at the latest private valuation. Although his current ownership percentage is only about 1% of the company, the sheer scale of the valuation ensures that his personal holdings have grown into a portfolio piece of immense magnitude.
Not all of these gains are the result of long-term patience. Iconiq, an investment firm, made a massive late-stage entry into Anthropic last year. At that point, the company was already valued at $183 billion. Iconiq wrote a check for $6 billion, a significant late-stage bet that has since appreciated to $17 billion. If the company’s IPO proceeds as anticipated, this specific investment has the potential to double again, illustrating how even recent, large-scale commitments can yield rapid returns in the current AI market climate.
Menlo Ventures, which led Anthropic’s Series D funding round, has also accumulated a substantial position. The firm has invested more than $1 billion in the company over time. At the current $965 billion valuation, Menlo’s stake is now worth approximately $14 billion. This trajectory highlights how leading major funding rounds can lock in significant value for the firms involved, even before the stock is available to the general public.
Sequoia, a veteran venture capital firm, took a different approach by entering the market earlier this year. At the time of its first investment, Anthropic was already valued at $380 billion. Sequoia invested $3 billion, which secured them roughly 1% ownership of the company. Despite the high entry price, the firm’s investment has already more than doubled in value, a testament to the rapid appreciation of the AI sector’s leading players.
Sound Ventures, a firm co-founded by Guy Oseary and actor Ashton Kutcher, has also seen its position grow considerably. The firm initially invested $35 million in the 2023 Series C round. Since then, it has funneled an additional $400 million into the company. While the exact current value of their stake is described as being worth billions, the initial entry point was much lower than the current market price. It is worth noting that Kutcher left Sound Ventures earlier this year to launch his own new venture capital firm, though the original investment remains active.
Perhaps the most dramatic increase in value belongs to Spark Capital, the only venture capital firm known to hold a board seat at Anthropic. The firm invested $75 million in the 2023 Series C round, when the company’s valuation stood at $5 billion. That relatively modest sum has since ballooned more than ninetyfold to a value of $7 billion. This exponential growth underscores the extreme leverage that early board-level involvement can provide in the current AI landscape.
As Anthropic prepares for its public listing, these figures serve as a benchmark for what a successful IPO in the AI sector might look like. With a potential valuation of $2 trillion, the stakes for these backers could rise further. However, the current private market numbers suggest that the financial rewards for these specific investors are already secured, regardless of how the public market reacts to the debut.
